I’ve always been passionate about interior design, and I owe much of that to my mom. Growing up, every move into a new house became a full-scale transformation. We ripped out carpets, refinished hardwood, painted walls, hung wallpaper, and turned each space into something beautiful. I was her little sidekick, and I loved every minute of it.
So it felt natural that I would go on to earn my diploma in interior design, something I was incredibly proud of. But sometimes the world has a way of making you question yourself. I remember sharing that accomplishment, only to have someone comment, “It’s not a bachelor’s in interior design. You can’t really do anything with that.”
That single comment planted doubt. Suddenly, what I had achieved no longer felt like enough. Never mind that I had a Bachelor of Arts, a diploma in interior design and hundreds of hours in sustainable design certifications, because to one person, it didn’t measure up. And strangely, that was all it took for me to shrink back from something I loved.
What I know now is this: creativity cannot be measured by a degree. You can hold a master’s or doctorate in design and still lack the vision, intuition, and imagination that breathe life into a space. Credentials may validate knowledge, but creativity is what gives it purpose.
If I could tell my younger self one thing, it would be this: do what you love, unapologetically. Passion has a way of sharpening talent, and when you honor what comes naturally to you, your gifts will always shine through. Never let someone else diminish your accomplishments because they don’t fit their definition of enough.
Because they are enough. And so are you. ✌️🤍
