If you are like any other consciously mindful individual, you likely want what’s best for you and your family. Which may include decisions such as having a healthy, balanced diet, getting plenty of exercise, and perhaps even eliminating toxins from your life.
For the past several years, I have been focusing on learning about and eliminating as many unnecessary chemicals from my day to day routine as possible. In doing so, I have replaced several cleaning and beauty products with natural alternatives.
If you haven’t been living under a rock for the past few years, you’ve likely come across several companies that have jumped on this ‘all-natural / organic’ train as well. However, before you blindly climb aboard your next all-natural adventure, I would like to encourage you to educate yourself first.
Essential Oils have been studied and used in Ayurvedic Medicine for years with great success. That being said, if this is of interest to you, I highly recommend that you educate yourself on not only the benefits of each, but the contraindications as well.
Not all essential oils are appropriate for those with high blood pressure, depression, epilepsy or during pregnancy (just to name a few) – some are even phototoxic – do you know which ones? Do you think it’s safe to ingest essential oils? If so, which ones and in what quantity?
Did you know that essential oils are composed of several chemical components including esters, monoterpens, aldehydes, ketones, sesquiterpenes, alcohol, and oxides? Do you still want to ingest these without proper guidance?
Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting that you shouldn’t move towards more natural options, I am, however, encouraging you to do so under the guidance of an appropriate individual.
An aromatherapist utilizes essential oils to enable the body’s natural healing process. As an aromatherapist, one is professionally trained in the properties of application and contraindications of essential oils. A fully certified Aromatherapist has completed a minimum of 450 hours of study, with an examination that covers anatomy, physiology, essential oils and aromatherapy. If you are looking for an Aromatherapist, I would recommend that you visit the Canadian Federation of Aromatherapists website for more information.
Should you wish to learn more about the therapeutic benefits of essential oils, I would recommend that you enrol in a legitimate (IE not via a company that sell Essential Oils) training that at least covers the basics, you can find a list of accredited institutions here.
Finally, if you’re not interested in embarking upon an academic voyage of natural wellness and just want to take advantage of the benefits of essential oils, make sure you ask about any contraindications as noted in paragraph 5 above.
