If you live in Calgary (or any super dry climate for that matter), you know how intense the dry climate can be on your skin. Between cold winters, constant wind, and low humidity, keeping skin hydrated takes more than a basic cream. After years of working with botanicals and making my own skincare, this simple three-step moisturizing routine has become my daily essential x 2.
So after I wash my face with my gentle DIY foaming face wash (to respect my skin’s natural PH on the daily), I follow this routine for a lightweight, deeply nourishing, and made entirely from plant-based ingredients that actually support the skin barrier hydration treatment. When the temperature drops and it gets extra dry, I add a couple more steps…but more on that later.
For now, as you start to build your holistic beauty apothecary, here are 3 essentials you should always have on hand:
Step One: Pure Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe vera is my go-to for hydration. It delivers water directly into the skin, calms irritation, and helps soothe redness and sensitivity that often come with dry weather. Because it’s a humectant, it pulls moisture into the skin without feeling heavy or greasy. I use it as my first layer to hydrate and prep the skin.
Step Two: Helichrysum Hydrosol
Next, I mist (or gently pat) on helichrysum hydrosol. This floral water is wonderful for balancing the skin, reducing inflammation, and supporting repair. It tones the skin, helps calm dryness, and prepares it to better absorb oils and serums. It’s especially helpful for mature or weather-stressed skin.
Step Three: Rosehip Seed Oil + Essential Oils
To seal everything in, I apply rosehip seed oil. It’s rich in essential fatty acids and natural vitamin A, which help support collagen, soften fine lines, and strengthen the skin barrier. It absorbs beautifully and leaves skin soft without clogging pores.
A few of my favourite essential oils to blend into rosehip seed oil are:
Frankincense oil – supports regeneration and improves skin tone
Neroli oil – helps with elasticity and dullness
Geranium oil – balances oil production and refines pores
Carrot seed oil – rich in antioxidants and excellent for mature, dry skin
Helichrysum oil – supports repair, reduces redness, and promotes skin renewal
This blend turns a simple oil into a nourishing facial serum that works especially well in dry climates.
Why This Works
This routine hydrates first, then seals in moisture. This approach supports the skin’s natural barrier and keeps it comfortable, soft, and balanced all day.
Simple ingredients. Real hydration. Skin that actually feels good. 🤍✌️
