Castile soap is one of those beautifully simple products that quietly does a lot of good. Traditionally made from olive oil instead of animal fats or harsh detergents, Castile soap is a true, plant-based soap that’s naturally gentle and biodegradable. Because it contains no synthetic fragrances, sulfates, or preservatives, it cleans the skin without stripping away its natural oils. That makes it especially kind to dry, sensitive, acne-prone, or mature skin. Olive oil is rich in antioxidants and vitamin E, which help support the skin barrier, soothe irritation, and leave your face feeling clean but not tight.
Another reason Castile soap is so loved in natural skincare is its versatility. One bottle can be used for face wash, body cleanser, hand soap, and even household cleaning, which makes it both economical and low-waste. When you dilute it properly and pair it with skin-loving ingredients like aloe, hydrosols, and gentle essential oils, it becomes a customizable cleanser that supports healthy skin rather than fighting against it.
Here’s a simple, gentle foaming face wash you can make at home using liquid Castile soap:
Gentle Foaming Face Wash Recipe
In a clean foaming soap dispenser, combine:
– ¼ liquid unscented Castile soap
– ¾ distilled water or a floral hydrosol such as helichrysum (my favourite) but rose is also highly regarded in skincare I just don’t like how it smells.
– 1 tablespoon pure aloe vera gel
– 1 teaspoon vegetable glycerin or jojoba oil for extra moisture
– 3-4 drops essential oil (optional, such as lavender, frankincense, or helichrysum for the face)
I use the larger foaming soap dispensers for body wash and these ones for travel sized face wash.
Gently swirl the bottle to mix, avoiding shaking too vigorously. To use, pump a small amount into your hands, massage onto damp skin, and rinse with lukewarm water. This cleanser leaves skin clean, soft, and balanced, with no squeaky-dry feeling, just calm, happy skin.
Follow up with your favourite spritz of a hydrosol (I LOVE helichrysum) plump your skin with hyaluronic acid or just apply a moisturizer or facial oil.
I’ve included links to the products I know, use daily x2 and love, but the world is your oyster. Even though these are natural products, always remember to patch test if you have super sensitive skin or are are uncertain.
Happy blending!
