Let’s take a look at the not-so-pretty side of interior design, shall we? While we all love a beautifully decorated space, the truth is that the industry is not without its dark side. From the staggering amount of waste generated to the harmful chemicals lurking in our paint, building materials and furniture, it’s clear that our love for aesthetics may come at a cost.
The sheer volume of furniture, decor, and building materials that end up in landfills is nothing short of alarming. Fast furniture trends have only exacerbated this issue, with cheap, disposable items being thrown out at an alarming rate. The environmental impact of this waste is impossible to ignore, as our landfills continue to overflow with items that could have been repurposed or recycled. Don’t believe me? Take a field trip to your local dump and experience it first hand.

And then there are VOCs. Ever heard of them? Volatile organic compounds are chemicals that are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. They are commonly found in paints, varnishes, synthetic fibres, building materials and cleaning products, and have been linked to a range of health issues, including respiratory problems, headaches, and even cancer. Despite these risks, VOCs are still prevalent in many of the products we use to decorate our homes.
So, what can we do about it? It’s time to start thinking more consciously about our interior design choices. Opt for sustainable, eco-friendly materials that are built to last. Consider second-hand or vintage pieces that add character and history to your space. And above all, prioritize your health and well-being by choosing products that are low in, or better yet, free from VOCs and safe for you and your family.
Interior design doesn’t have to be a dirty business. By making informed choices and being mindful of the impact of our design decisions, we can create spaces that are not only beautiful but also sustainable and healthy for both ourselves and the planet. Let’s redefine what it means to design a home, one conscious choice at a time. ✌️
