I get asked this question ALL THE TIME. I have always been fascinated by the concept of the human soul, the nature of reality, and the interconnectedness of all beings.
I was also that annoying child that would always ask, ‘BUT WHY’? Sometimes I am satisfied with the answer conventional wisdom provides, but often I’m left wondering.
Studying Metaphysical Science allows me the opportunity to observe many philosophies without judgement. As a non-denominational spiritual minister, I get to facilitate and participate in many respectful conversations that talk about abstract concepts with an open mind.

In society we often, without much consideration, refer to the concept of nurturing our ‘mind, body and soul’, however, have you ever really considered what it means to nurture your soul? Today, I’d like to open a conversation around that exact topic based upon what I have come to learn about the human soul.
I’d love to know your thoughts so please feel free to leave your comments below.
The concept of the human soul varies across different philosophical, religious, and cultural traditions. While there isn’t a universally agreed-upon definition, I can provide a general explanation based on commonly held beliefs.
Origin of the Human Soul:
According to many philosophical and religious perspectives, the human soul originates from a transcendent source and possesses characteristics that differentiate it from the physical body. Different beliefs posit distinct origins for the soul. For example, in Abrahamic religions (such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), the soul is typically seen as created by a divine entity, while in some Dharmic religions (like Hinduism and Buddhism), the soul is considered eternal and has undergone cycles of birth and rebirth.
Function and Nature of the Human Soul:
The human soul is often associated with deep emotions, consciousness, and individuality. It is thought to possess qualities such as self-awareness, rationality, morality, and free will. Depending on the belief system, the soul may also contribute to a person’s spiritual growth and connection with a higher power. It is often considered to be the essence of one’s identity and one’s innermost being.
At the Time of Death:
Beliefs about what happens to the soul at the time of death vary significantly among different spiritual and philosophical traditions. Some common views include:
- Afterlife: Many religious belief systems suggest an afterlife, where the soul continues to exist in a different form or plane of existence. The nature of this afterlife can vary greatly from tradition to tradition, ranging from heavenly realms to places of punishment or realms of reincarnation.
- Reincarnation: Some Eastern religious beliefs teach that the soul undergoes rebirth after death, reentering a new physical body to continue its spiritual journey in the cycle of samsara. The circumstances of the next life are believed to be influenced by the actions and karma accumulated in previous lives.
- Judgment: Some faith traditions propose a concept of judgment, where the soul is evaluated based on its actions and moral choices during a person’s lifetime. The soul may be rewarded or punished based on the outcome of this judgment and sent to a corresponding realm.
- Dissolution: Certain philosophical beliefs, particularly within some branches of Buddhism, suggest that the soul is an illusion or a transient phenomenon that ultimately dissolves upon death. In this view, there is no continued individual existence, but rather a merging into a greater universal consciousness or cessation of existence altogether.
It’s important to note that these explanations are a broad overview, and the beliefs surrounding the human soul can differ greatly depending on cultural, religious, or personal interpretations.
What do you think? Have you ever openly (and without judgement or attachment to one specific belief), considered this topic?
With love + light,
Brandelyn
