Prior to commencing my yoga journey, I had no idea what a chakra was and it wasn’t until my first yoga teacher training did I really start to understand their significance.
As more and more people start to explore their wellness beyond the physical aspects of our ‘meat suit’, it’s important to explore our subtle energy system. For many, these concepts will seem far fetched, and for others, this information will resonate.
If you are interested in learning more about energy healing, exploring the chakras is a great place to start!
Chakras are energy centers in the body that are believed to be responsible for the distribution of energy throughout the body. The word “chakra” comes from Sanskrit and means “wheel” or “disc.” There are seven major chakras in the body, each associated with a specific part of the body and a particular color. When these chakras are balanced and open, our body is in a state of harmony and well-being.
The seven major chakras are:
- Root chakra: Located at the base of the spine, this chakra is associated with our sense of security and stability. Its color is red.
- Sacral chakra: Located just below the navel, this chakra is associated with our creativity and sexuality. Its color is orange.
- Solar plexus chakra: Located in the upper abdomen, this chakra is associated with our personal power and self-esteem. Its color is yellow.
- Heart chakra: Located in the center of the chest, this chakra is associated with our ability to love and connect with others. Its color is green.
- Throat chakra: Located at the base of the throat, this chakra is associated with our ability to communicate and express ourselves. Its color is blue.
- Third eye chakra: Located in the center of the forehead, this chakra is associated with our intuition and inner wisdom. Its color is indigo.
- Crown chakra: Located at the top of the head, this chakra is associated with our spiritual connection and enlightenment. Its color is violet.
Balancing your chakras is essential for overall health and well-being. Here are some ways to balance your chakras:
- Meditation: One of the most effective ways to balance your chakras is through meditation. Find a quiet place, sit comfortably and focus on each chakra, imagining its associated color and energy flowing freely through your body.
- Yoga: Practicing yoga poses that target each chakra can help to balance and open them. For example, tree pose is great for the root chakra and warrior pose for the solar plexus chakra.
- Sound therapy: Listening to specific tones and frequencies can help to balance your chakras. Each chakra is associated with a specific sound, so find a playlist that targets each one.
- Aromatherapy: Using essential oils that correspond to each chakra can help to balance them. For example, lavender oil is great for the crown chakra and peppermint oil for the throat chakra.
- Reiki: Reiki is a form of energy healing that can help to balance your chakras. A trained practitioner will use their hands to channel energy into your body, promoting healing and balance.
By practicing these techniques, you can help to balance your chakras and promote overall health and well-being. Remember that each chakra is interconnected, so it’s important to focus on all of them to achieve complete harmony in your body and mind.
