✨Happiness is not something that is ready made. It comes from your own actions. ✨
~Dalai Lama
Success is often seen as the key to happiness. It’s a common belief that once you achieve your goals, you’ll experience an elated feeling, a sense of accomplishment, and a lasting happiness. For many people, this belief translates into a constant pursuit of success. They work long hours, make great sacrifices, and invest all their time and resources into this elusive ‘happiness.’ What many people don’t realize is that the pursuit of success can often be the very thing that prevents them from experiencing true happiness.
Success is often viewed as a destination, a specific point in time where all the hard work and dedication pays off. However, I’ve since learned the reality is that success is fleeting. It’s a never-ending cycle of achieving one goal and then setting your sights on the next one. No matter how much you achieve, there’s always going to be something more to aspire to. This insatiable quest for the next best thing can lead to a sense of restlessness and dissatisfaction.
When driven by the pursuit of success, it can become very easy to lose sight of what’s really important in life. For example, I had become so focused on my goals that I was neglecting my health, relationships, and wellbeing. Instead, I placed all of my energy into achieving success, and in the process, I compromised my happiness. How ironic?! Even though I had achieved my goals, the happiness experienced was often short-lived. As soon as I had reached one milestone, I was already looking ahead to the next one. This constant search for success can create an endless loop of stress, anxiety, and unhappiness.
The never-ending pursuit of success is also linked to the fear of failure. We’re afraid to fail because we feel it will mean we’re not good enough. This fear often leads to burnout and an inability to enjoy our accomplishments. We’re constantly striving to be better, faster, and stronger, which can lead to an unhealthy obsession with success. We end up sacrificing our happiness for the sake of achieving our goals.
So, what’s the solution? The key to finding true happiness lies not in the pursuit of success but in the journey. It’s about embracing the ups and downs, the successes and failures, and the lessons learned along the way. Happiness is about finding balance and living a life that is aligned with your values and priorities. It’s about taking the time to appreciate the present moment and not just focusing on the future.
Success is important, but it’s not the only thing that matters. By embracing the present moment and finding balance in our lives, we can experience true happiness and fulfillment.
