Have you ever wondered why lavender is often used as a pillow spray or recommended as a sleep aid? I know I have! As a part of my Aromatherapy training, we learned all sorts of valuable information about the amazing healing properties of plants. 🌱
Lavender has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for a variety of ailments, including sleep disorders. This beautiful purple flower, known for its calming scent and medicinal properties, has become a staple in many homes as a go-to sleep aid. In this blog post, we will explore why lavender is such a great sleep aid.
Lavender helps promote relaxation
One of the most well-known benefits of lavender is its ability to promote relaxation. Its sweet, floral scent has been shown to have a calming effect on the brain and nervous system, decreasing anxiety and promoting feelings of calmness. This can be especially helpful for those who struggle to fall asleep due to racing thoughts or anxiety.
Lavender reduces stress and improves mood
Stress and anxiety can significantly impact the quality of our sleep, leading to restlessness, nightmares, and other sleep disruptions. Lavender has been shown to help reduce stress and improve mood, providing a more peaceful environment for sleep. In one study, individuals who sniffed lavender before bedtime reported feeling less anxious and more relaxed, leading to improved sleep quality.
Lavender has a sedative effect
Lavender contains natural compounds that have a sedative effect on the body, making it an effective sleep aid. These compounds, including linalool and linalyl acetate, work to slow down the nervous system and promote relaxation, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night.
Lavender can improve sleep quality
In addition to helping you fall asleep faster, lavender has been shown to improve sleep quality. In a study of elderly patients, lavender aromatherapy was found to improve overall sleep quality, including increased duration of deep sleep and less restlessness. This can be especially beneficial for those who suffer from sleep disorders such as insomnia or sleep apnea.
Whether you use lavender essential oil, lavender pillows, or lavender scented candles, incorporating this beautiful flower into your sleep routine can help you get a good night’s rest and wake up feeling refreshed in the morning.
