We’ve been to the Kananaskis Nordic Spa a couple of times this year and each time we go, the cold water therapy gets a little easier. Don’t get me wrong, the difference in temperature between the hot pools and the cold plunge pool is drastic, but so beneficial. If you’ve ever wondered why anyone would subject themselves to such insanity…keep reading!
Hot and cold water therapy involves the immersion of the body in hot water followed by immediate immersion in cold water, usually with temperatures ranging between 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38°C) and 40 degrees Fahrenheit (5°C).
I completely understand why someone who isn’t familiar with the concept would think it might be like dipping oneself in torture. However, while the therapy might come with a bit of a shock factor, the benefits that come with alternating hot and cold water therapy are totally worth it.
Still not convinced and wondering why anyone would ever consider such a ridiculous endeavour? Here are some of the benefits of alternating hot and cold water therapy:
- Enhances blood circulation
When your body comes into contact with hot water, blood vessels dilate, allowing blood to flow freely through your body. As soon as you submerge yourself in cold water, blood vessels constrict, which directs blood to the vital organs in your body. This back-and-forth process helps to improve blood circulation and enhance the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the body’s cells.
- Relieves sore muscles and stiffness
Alternating hot and cold water therapy can help to relieve muscle stiffness, soreness or tension. The hot water helps to soothe and relax muscles while the cold water reduces inflammation and swelling. By immersing the body alternatively in hot and cold water, it can help boost or activate your body’s natural healing mechanisms and reduce pain and discomfort.
- Boosts immune system
Contrast therapy can help boost metabolism and boost the immune system. According to medical research, it appears that a brief exposure to cold water can activate leukocytes, which help fight off diseases and infections.
- Aids in Stress Relief
Alternating hot and cold water therapy can help to reduce stress levels by triggering the production of endorphins. Endorphins are chemicals produced in the body that create a feeling of euphoria, making it easier to feel relaxed and more comfortable.
- Good for the skin
Hot and cold water therapy can help to remove toxins from the skin and open up pores. When you take a hot bath or shower and then suddenly immerse yourself in cold water, it causes blood vessels to constrict, and then open again, rejuvenating your skin’s cells and providing a healthy glow.
Alternating hot and cold water therapy has numerous benefits that everyone can enjoy. It’s a great way to help improve circulation, alleviate pain, and reduce stress. Not to mention, a gentle and effective technique that can help restore balance to your body, mind, and spirit. #Namaste #YoureWelcome

Not to mention that a good game of Scrabble in front of their amazing fireplace in the main lodge was just what the doctor ordered! Coincidence? I think not!
